Game Review

Wolfenstein 3D is a first-person shooter developed by Id Software and published by Apogee Software in 1992 for DOS. It has since been ported for several systems including PC-98, Mac, Windows, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.

The game was inspired by the 1980s Muse Software video game Castle Wolfenstein, a top-down infiltration game.

Wolfenstein 3D came out hot on the heels of the Commander Keen series and utilized the game engine created by John Cormack. It was pre-Doom, but you can see that many of the gameplay elements made their way into this future release. Playing as a captured allied spy, you must escape your Nazi captors and foil their plans for world domination. The game is broken down into six episodes which further break down into ten levels each. Eight regular levels, a boss level, and a secret level. Each level has a labyrinthian set up with lots of areas to explore, secrets to find, and enemies to blow away. You have a set number of lives, but it is possible to earn extra lives as you play.

Wolfenstein 3D is one of Apogeeā€™s best selling games and is looked at by many as the godfather of 3D and first-person shooters, first of all, Doom. It raked in cash for both Apogee and Id in its heyday. 26 years later it still holds up as a classic of the genre and a hell of a good game.

I'm on Mac and I recently downloaded this and Spear of Destiny. I'm trying to figure out how to get saves working. When I save it appears, but when I try to load it it exits out of the whole thing. Also if I save and then quit and reopen the game, it isn't there anymore.
    EDIT***
If anyone has this problem, I figured it out.
I had the file on another hard drive and for some reason when I went to save it would exit.
I also had the executable file on my main hard drive as an alias of the original on the other hard drive.
I moved the game to the main drive and ran it from there and I had no problems.
So I think DOSBox has issues with aliases on Mac and saving when the file is on another drive.
Great work on this game! It's a classic!

    Honestly didn't notice it.
Beyond Castle Wolfenstein has actually been officially released as free by it's original author. The source has also been released. The freeware version also has fixes like no longer being a PC booter and having its timing repaired (no longer need to adjust the cycles because it's too fast).

We already have Castle Wolfenstein. We could add Beyond Castle Wolfenstein. What do you think about the C64 version?

Think you could get this game's prequels on here? Fair waring though, they're PC booters. Beyond Castle Wolfenstein, the second game, does have a DOS source port though.
