Game Review

Midwinter is a first-person action adventure game with strategy elements created by Mike Singleton for Maelstrom Games and published for Atari ST and PC in 1989, then ported to Amiga in 1990.

The game is set in a post-apocalyptic world entirely covered by snow. The player initially controls Captain John Stark (a future Stark from Winterfell?), who has to protect the island of Midwinter from the invasion of the evil General Masters' forces. The captain will need to recruit several people to help him organize a guerrilla army, strong enough to stop the enemy.

Midwinter is a true hybrid, with elements of simulation, strategy, action (including first-person shooter), and role-playing. The player will have to control all recruits, each one for a period of 2 hours of game time. The story also plays an important part, with different characters and different personalities and backgrounds.

Considered one of the best titles ever created for the Atari ST, this title was a remarkable achievement considering that was created in 1989. At the time, it received extremely positive reviews, but even today it's still played and reviewed by many fans.
