Game Review

Bio Challenge is a science fiction platformer developed by Delphine Software International and published by Palace Software in 1988. It was created by well-known french game designer Paul Cuisset.

Based on the distant future, you play as a cyborg meant to save humanity from itself. Human genes are getting weaker by the generation, and scientists struggle to find a solution. After creating you, they test your abilities by putting you through trials. It would help if you survived to rescue human existence. During each level, you need to keep an eye on your oil supply which is depleted with every movement and enemy attack. There is also a time limit to be aware of. Run out of oil or time and you fail the level and must start over, losing a life. Each level ends in a boss battle, and you must make every shot count as ammo is limited. Ammo is acquired by killing the other enemies found around the levels. This can be done by crushing them or using other enemies as projectiles.

Bio Challenge fared well with critics and was a unique original release. It was praised for its graphics and sound, taking home second place for Best Sound in 1989. This arcade-style action game presents quite a challenge as there is no save feature, and you have to start from the beginning on a replay. However, there is no one set way to complete the levels, so that you can do it differently than your first play-through. This game is a real skill tester and will keep you playing until you master it.
