Game Review

Street Fighter II is the arcade sequel to the original Street Fighter and was developed and published by Capcom in 1991.

Originally made for arcades, it was later released for other platforms, including that Amiga and PC. This installment improves upon many of the concepts introduced in the first game, including the use of command-based special moves.

With no real plot to speak of, this is a true beat-’em-up game. Engage in side-scrolling, one-on-one close combat in a series of best two out of three matches. To win the matches you must drain your opponent’s ‘vitality’ before the timer runs out. Every third match in single player mode leads to a bonus level where you participate in different mini-games. Unlike its predecessor, you can choose between multiple different characters with their own fighting style and special moves. This installment also introduced the concept of combination attacks. More an accident than an intended outcome, this combination system became the standard for fighting games. It was also the first fighting game to offer the ability to fight another human opponent directly, as opposed to comparing scores. In this fast-paced action fighting game punch, kick and hadouken your way to victory.

Street Fighter II was by far more popular than the original Street Fighter. It is hailed as one of the most influential games of all time, more particularly in its own genre. This wildly successful game revolutionized and popularized the fighting genre. It spurred game developers to produce their own fighting game franchises. It was also responsible for revitalizing the arcade video game industry in the early 90’s, reaching a popularity not witnessed since Pac-Man. It has won multiple awards and is on the Top 100 Games of All Time list. This little slice of history should not be missed.

The Genesis/Mega Drive version included is the Champion Edition, where all the 12 characters are unlocked.
