Game Review

F17 Challenge is an arcade racing game created by Holodream and published by Team17 exclusively for the Amiga in 1993.

The game doesn't try to be considered a simulator. Rules of physics are not fully respected, so you cannot really compare this title with the racing sims by Geoff Crammond (e.g., Formula 1 Grand Prix). However, Holodream succeeded in creating a fun and straightforward racing game set in the Formula One world. You will be able to choose the most famous cars, such as Ferrari, Williams, McLaren, and Benetton. You will have to manage pit-stops carefully and avoid collisions with other vehicles, which can be very dangerous. Since the game could not use the official F1 license, the developers decided to leave all the pilot names editable. Brilliant idea, because you can create your favorite roster.

The 2D graphics are used at their best, and it's one of the winning points of this title. The sprites of the vehicles are perfectly designed, and the backgrounds are beautiful. The sounds effects are perfect, and the original music is a nice touch. The head-up display, Lap time, Best Opponent, Best Lap, and other info shown on the top of the screen give you the impression to watch a Formula One race on TV. Add the cutscenes, and you can see why many people compared this with the Cinemaware sports titles.

In terms of gameplay, Lotus Turbo Challenge 2 or Jaguar XJ220 can be considered superior to F17, significantly because Holodream didn't add any 2-players mode. Being able to compete against a friend was one of Lotus's, or Pitstop II, main pluses. Anyway, if you like the idea of an excellent arcade racing game set in the Formula 1 world, F17 Challenge is a pleasant and entertaining title. Drive carefully!
