Game Review

Flashback: The Quest For Identity is a sci-fi platformer/action-adventure published by U.S. Gold, and developed by Delphine Software. The game is the brainchild of Paul Cuisset, creator of Future Wars, who wrote, designed and programmed parts of it.

The game was first released in 1992 for the Amiga, but has since been ported to on MS-DOS, SNES, Sega Genesis, Sega CD, 3DO, Macintosh, FM Towns, and the Atari Jaguar. A remake was made for Xbox Live Arcade in 2013.

Flashback is a cinematic platformer (much like Prince of Persia). The game is set in 2142. Our player character is Conrad B, an amnesiac. There are shooting and problem solving elements to the game. Much of the game is spent running and jumping, but some of it is spent solving puzzles and exploring. There are cutscenes with vector graphics, but in the CD versions these are replaced with 3D animations.

FLUX considers Flashback the 10th Best Game of All Time. Why does it deserve such accolades? Incredibly satisfying action, tight controls, and gorgeous graphics really put this game over the top. The atmosphere of the game is amazing. You can really connect with Conrad. It's certainly one of the best platforming games of all time.
