Game Review

NASCAR Racing, released in 1994 for DOS, was the first game in the NASCAR Racing series developed by Papyrus started in 1994.

Developed by Papyrus Design Group and released in 1994 for MS-DOS, the game was one of the first serious attempts to bring an authentic NASCAR simulation to the PC. Papyrus, already known for IndyCar Racing, outdid itself with this title, thanks in part to an official NASCAR license that allowed the inclusion of real drivers, authentic teams, and official tracks from the 1994 season. The game featured over 25 of the 40 regular drivers in the 1994 NASCAR Winston Cup season.

Unlike arcade racers such as Daytona USA, NASCAR Racing focused entirely on realism. The physics engine was built using real data, with factors like aerodynamics, tire wear, and fuel consumption significantly impacting each race. Vehicle damage was also implemented in surprising detail, forcing players to drive with caution and strategy. Races featured up to 40 cars on oval tracks with long race durations, delivering an experience that mirrored real-life NASCAR events. The AI was strong for the era and made for a genuinely competitive experience.

Technically, the game pushed 1994 hardware to its limits. It offered smooth 3D graphics with SVGA support and realistic sound through audio cards like the Sound Blaster. Although it ran on modest systems, a 486 processor or better was recommended for optimal performance.

One of its most advanced features was multiplayer support via modem or LAN, which was still uncommon at the time. This allowed for competitive play between human drivers, laying early groundwork for the online racing communities that would emerge later. The game also featured a paint shop for customizing car liveries and provided deep race setup options, appealing to dedicated racing fans.

NASCAR Racing was a commercial success, selling hundreds of thousands of copies within months and quickly becoming one of the most popular racing simulators on PC. Critics praised its realism, depth, and technical achievements. It was often mentioned alongside IndyCar Racing as a high point in early '90s racing simulations.

The game would go on to launch a successful series, with NASCAR 2 first, and then culminating in NASCAR Racing 2003, which is still considered one of the best NASCAR sims ever made. The knowledge and experience gained by Papyrus during this era contributed directly to the creation of iRacing, which today stands as a benchmark in the racing sim world.

NASCAR Racing remains a landmark title in the evolution of racing games—an early example of how driving simulators could offer complex, realistic, and immersive experiences long before mainstream esports and online leagues took shape.
