Game Review

Ultima VI: The False Prophet, developed by Origin Systems, is the sixth part of the role-playing video game series of Ultima. It was released in 1990 for DOS, then in 1991 and 1992 for Commodore 64, Amiga, and Atari ST. The game was planned to have a 16-bit version for the Apple II, but that was eventually scrapped.

Ultima 6 is the third (also the last) game in the Age of Enlightenment Trilogy. This title brings you directly into a world filled with demons, and as you come back to Britannia, your focus is to try and stop all the gargoyles from destroying the land and eliminating humankind. As you play, you also get to uncover a lot of secrets that will help you reshape your ideas regarding the entire attack.

The game had Richard Garriott as the main designer behind the game. Since it was the end of a trilogy, they had to go big, and in this case, there were quite a lot of advancements compared to the predecessors.

The development of this game was influenced by many relevant RPGs during that time, such as Dungeon Master and Times of Lore.

This new incarnation of the series came with many technological advancements. First of all, the new perspective. Instead of different views for dungeons and the outside world, you have a big map that you can explore freely, from a single, isometric point of view. So no more first-person view for dungeons, and no more top-down view for the outside world. Also, no more small icons to represent towns.

Besides, this is the first game in the series that added object manipulation, crafting, and movement features. It also has a lot more NPCs and quests than the predecessors.

The sound and graphics are improved, mainly thanks to the VGA graphic card launches and new sound card technologies. The interface brought some new ideas since it was using point and click icons for a more streamlined experience.

If you’re into retro RPG titles, Ultima VI: The False Prophet is well worth your time. It’s a more artful version of the previous titles, which brings a cool story, better graphics, and some interesting, new mechanics. The RPG elements are still impressive, and the overall quality of the game is excellent. It’s not a buggy game, and while multiple versions were planned, the DOS version is the main one, and it works incredibly well.

Ultima VI: The False Prophet is an iconic game that stands out with its unique story and exciting changes to the series. It brings in many unique elements, and the overall game is a lot of fun to go through. There is a great progression system, and the actions you take do have consequences. As a whole, it’s a complete RPG package and a must-play for any fan of the genre!
