Game Review

Emmanuelle: A Game of Eroticism is a graphic adventure created by Tomahawk and published by Coktel Vision in 1989 for Amiga, MS-DOS, and Atari ST.

The game, categorized as an adult title, is based on the book written in 1959 and published in 1967, which described the "amorous" adventures of the uninhibited protagonist Emmanuelle, the bored wife of a French diplomat. The autobiographical book (originally titled The Joys of a Woman) was very successful. In 1974, a film starring actress Sylvia Kristel was produced based on the book. The film marked the beginning of a very popular series of highly successful erotic films, one of the greatest successes of French cinema.

Therefore, it is not surprising that the French studio Coktel, through its Tomahawk label, decided to create a video game based on this character. Note that the game is not based on the film but on the book, from which it is officially licensed.

As for the actual game, you will find some references to sex and partial nudity, but we are not facing a great example of graphic adventure. By the way, you will not play as the famous Emmanuelle; instead, you will be a man who would like to meet her (makes sense). You will travel to South America, where you must retrieve three statuettes (the missions will also allow you to meet some beautiful girls in the meantime). You can meet Emmanuelle at the end if you have done everything correctly.

The game design is not innovative, and the difficulty level is low. This aspect may be appreciated if you are not a fan of this genre but are fascinated by the famous protagonist. Even non-experts will be able to complete it quickly.

It's a shame that the music is completely absent, but the game's graphics are beautiful and rich in atmosphere. It is worth noting that while many games released for DOS, Amiga, and Atari ST platforms are color-limited - using a maximum of 16 colors to be compatible with all three platforms - Emmanuelle utilizes all 32 colors of the Amiga, then reduces to 16 for the ST and DOS versions. Although the color palette does not change much from one screen to another, always focusing on blue, sand, and dark red, the game is pleasing to the eye.

Overall, thanks to its excellent atmosphere, beautiful graphics, and approachable difficulty level, Emmanuelle is an appreciable game if you are inspired by the idea of a game with soft-erotic content. However, if you are a fan of graphic adventures, the simplicity of this Coktel production might disappoint you a bit.
