Game Review

Wrath of the Demon is a side-scrolling action adventure created by Abstrax and Readysoft in 1990 for the Amiga. Later it was ported to Atari ST, Commodore 64, and MS-DOS.

The game is clearly inspired by Shadow of the Beast in terms of gameplay, while the influence of the other Readysoft-Don Bluth titles (Dragon's Lair, Space Ace) is visible in terms of look & feel. High-quality graphics and plenty of cutscenes, plus a soundtrack composed by David Whittaker, make the game worth a try.

Wrath of the Demon is a beautifully drawn game, but right from the outset, it just wants to be Shadow of the Beast. The music bears an uncanny resemblance, as does the general style and parallax scrolling. It's a beautifully drawn game; a bit cartoony and the novelty really lies in the first level, when you're riding on horseback. The rest of the game is frustratingly hard, as you attempt to control your wimpy snowflake of a hero. What I remembered as being a really good game is just a frustrating experience. This wants to be an epic adventure, but it is completely let down by the gameplay, which these days I just don't have the patience for. It is still a game I would love to see all the way through, but I think I'd need a cheat mode for that...
