Game Review

Syndicate Wars is the second title in the Syndicate series, created by Bullfrog Productions in 1996. Syndicate Wars includes 60 missions spread through 30 different cities.

In the neon-soaked dystopia of the future, where megacorporations vie for dominance and cybernetic agents execute their ruthless agendas, one game stood out as a beacon of dark brilliance: Syndicate Wars. Developed by Bullfrog Productions and published by Electronic Arts, this isometric real-time tactical and strategic gem left an indelible mark on the gaming landscape.

Syndicate Wars emerged from the shadow of its predecessor, the groundbreaking Syndicate (1993). The original Syndicate introduced players to a world controlled by ruthless corporations, where agents implanted with CHIP technology carried out covert missions. Syndicate Wars, released in 1996, transported us 95 years into the future, where the EuroCorp syndicate reigned supreme. The CHIP implants, once tools of control, now faced a viral threat named “Harbinger,” leaving citizens vulnerable and sparking an armed insurrection by the “unguided.”

Syndicate Wars preserved the isometric view that fans loved, but it added rotation and pitch controls, enhancing the strategic depth. As a player, you commanded a squad of cybernetically enhanced agents, each with unique abilities.

Agents could be commanded singly or in groups, performing tasks like pursuing enemies, collecting items, or assuming defensive positions.

The autonomous operation of agents improved over time through cybernetic brain upgrades. The entire map was visible from the start, allowing strategic planning and route optimization.

Syndicate Wars offered an array of weapons, from miniguns to long-range rifles and directed-energy weapons. Energy management became crucial, as all reusable items drew power from portable micro-fusion reactors. The destructible environment allowed for creative tactics, including demolishing buildings with nuclear grenades.

Syndicate Wars masterfully recaptured the dark, deadly emotion of the original. Critics praised its variety of weapons, scenarios, and gorgeous graphics. However, some felt that the graphics fell short in 1996’s competitive market. Regardless, Syndicate Wars remains a cult classic, cherished by those who appreciate its blend of strategy, action, and cyberpunk aesthetics.

As a lifelong gamer, Syndicate Wars holds a special place in my heart. The adrenaline rush of executing a perfect mission, the satisfaction of outsmarting rival agents, and the haunting echoes of crumbling buildings—were all etched into my gaming memories. While the original Syndicate had its charm, Syndicate Wars elevated the franchise to new heights. It’s a testament to the power of immersive storytelling and innovative gameplay.

Sadly, unlike the first game Syndicate and the expansion, this new chapter was not released for the Amiga.
