Game Review

Out Run is an arcade racing game created by Sega in 1986. It is one of the best-selling video games of all time. In 1987, it was ported to the Commodore 64 and ZX Spectrum. The Amiga and Atari ST followed in 1988, while the PC MS-DOS version was released in 1989. The Genesis version arrived late, in 1991.

OutRun is one of SEGA’s most legendary arcade racing games. Designed by Yu Suzuki and developed by SEGA AM2, it redefined the driving game genre with its exhilarating sense of speed, non-linear track design, and vibrant graphics. Unlike traditional circuit-based racers, OutRun is more about the joy of driving—blasting down open roads in a red Ferrari Testarossa, weaving through traffic, and enjoying a scenic, high-speed cruise while listening to an unforgettable soundtrack. The arcade version was a technical marvel, but its many home ports varied significantly in quality, leading to endless debates about which version best captured the arcade experience.

OutRun's arcade cabinet was an ambitious feat of engineering, featuring hydraulic motion for a more immersive driving experience. Powered by SEGA’s Super Scaler technology, it boasted large, smoothly animated sprites that gave a convincing illusion of 3D depth. The game also introduced multiple route choices, allowing players to select different branching paths at each checkpoint, leading to five possible endings. Adding to the experience was the iconic soundtrack, with three selectable songs—Passing Breeze, Magical Sound Shower, and Splash Wave—all of which became instantly recognizable classics.

Given the arcade version’s technical prowess, porting OutRun to home systems in the late '80s and early '90s was a formidable challenge. Some versions retained the original's spirit, while others suffered from hardware limitations.

Sega Master System (1987) was one of the better 8-bit versions. The Master System OutRun was impressive for its time, featuring smooth scrolling and a recognizable, though downgraded, soundtrack. However, the frame rate was lower, and the sense of speed wasn’t quite as thrilling as the arcade. Still, it was one of the best racing games on the console. The C64 port was infamous for its sluggish frame rate, unresponsive controls, and rough visuals. The music, while decent, couldn’t make up for the poor gameplay experience. The ZX Spectrum was surprisingly decent, given the hardware; the Spectrum version featured monochrome graphics but played relatively well, maintaining the track’s layout and some sense of speed.

The 16-bit Atari ST and Amiga versions should have been great, but both were underwhelming. The Amiga port had choppy scrolling and poor music conversion, while the Atari ST version fared even worse with sluggish performance. Given the capabilities of these machines, OutRun deserved better.

Finally, the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive (1991) was probably the best home port. The Genesis version offered smooth gameplay, grest sprite scaling, and an excellent rendition of the arcade’s soundtrack. Though it wasn’t a perfect 1:1 conversion, it captured the feel of OutRun better than most other ports.

OutRun remains a timeless racing classic, thanks to its perfect blend of arcade thrills, stunning visuals, and unforgettable music. While its home ports ranged from fantastic to downright awful, the game's legacy is undeniable.
