Game Review

Vroom is a racing arcade/sim developed by Lankhor and released initially for the Atari ST in 1991, then Amiga, and finally MS-DOS.

The game, inspired by the coin-op Pole Position, was born originally on the Sinclair QL. Daniel Macré created it in 6 months, and Pyramide published it in 1986 with the title Wroom!

With the arrival of the Atari ST, Macré asked the help of Lankhor to create a game for the new platforms, and the newly formed team started working on the latest version. Unfortunately, Vroom wasn't completed until the other Lankhor titles (e.g., Maupiti Island) were completed. This is a pity because the development of Vroom started even before the Amiga was released. It could have been ready in 1988-1989 if they wanted.

Finally, in 1991 Vroom was finished, and despite the slightly outdated graphics, the game was fantastic. Probably the fastest racing sim ever created for the ST. The Amiga version released one year later was a faithful port, and unlike other cases, it was perfect.

Even though the game doesn't have all the features of Formula 1 Grand Prix, Vroom is a highly engaging racing sim. You can choose between manual or automatic gear; you must stop at the boxes for the pit stop, and you can see the other cars in the side-view mirrors. The graphics are simple, but they are a nice mix of 2D and 3D, allowing the game to be swift. Add to this excellent controls and responsiveness.

Maybe Vroom didn't become very popular because it was released too late when the competition was too intense, but it's a game that can compete with any other ST/Amiga Formula One sim. Let's try it!
