Paperboy 2 is an arcade game developed by Tengen and published by Mindscape, originally released for 8-bit systems in 1991. The initial NES, Amstrad CPC, and ZX Spectrum were followed by Amiga, MS-DOS, SNES, and Mega Drive/Genesis. This sequel to the arcade classic Paperboy expands upon the original's newspaper delivery concept while introducing new mechanics and challenges that distinguish it from its predecessor.
The core gameplay retains the original's formula of navigating suburban streets while delivering newspapers to subscribing houses. Players can now choose between a male or female protagonist, each with identical abilities but different character sprites. The most substantial enhancement comes from the expanded control scheme that allows movement in multiple directions rather than the rigid left-to-right scrolling of the original Paperboy. This freedom transforms the gameplay from a linear obstacle course into a more strategic navigation challenge where players can choose optimal routes through neighborhoods while avoiding the various hazards that populate each street. Cars, dogs, construction workers, and other environmental dangers require careful timing and positioning to overcome safely.
Level design shows considerable improvement over its predecessor, with more varied environments and creative obstacles that go beyond simple avoidance mechanics. Players encounter everything from breakdancing street performers to runaway lawn mowers, creating a chaotic suburban landscape that feels both authentic and surreal. The training course segments between delivery rounds provide welcome variety and skill-building opportunities that help players master the game's refined control system.
The comparison between the 16-bit versions and the 8-bit ones is a bit disappointing. The color palette is limited, and there is too much dithering, as if the SNES or Amiga could not handle at least 32 colors. The colors of the Genesis version are a bit brighter. The audio is improved, but the impression is still of playing an 8-bit game.
However, Paperboy 2 represents a successful sequel that addresses the original's limitations while maintaining its unique charm and addictive gameplay loop. The enhanced mobility, improved level design, and character options create a more engaging and replayable experience. It's a nice sequel to one of the most popular video games of the 80s.
