Altered Beast is a beat ''em-up arcade game created by SEGA in 1988 as a coin-op machine. The same year it was also converted to the SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis console, becoming the pack-in game officially offered with the console.
The title was designed by Makoto Uchida, author of the legendary Golden Axe, another dark fantasy arcade. In this case, the game is set in Ancient Greece. You are the champion of Zeus, and your task will be saving Athena, kidnapped by the evil underworld god. Besides your strength, you have at your disposal some magical powers that will allow you to transform into a beast: a dragon, a werebear, a weretiger, a werewolf, or a golden werewolf. As you can imagine, each transformation comes with its powers: the bear has a petrifying breath, the dragon can fire lightning bolts, and so on.
Altered Beast became famous for its large sprites, and fantastic animations faithfully ported to the Genesis version.
