Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake is a top-down stealth action game developed and published by Konami and released in 1990. It was written and designed by Hideo Kojima, who also designed the MSX2 version of the original Metal Gear.
Strangely enough, Konami started the development of a sequel of Metal Gear, called Snake's Revenge, without informing Hideo Kojima. When he discovered it, he decided to create his own sequel, Metal Gear 2. Unfortunately this was released in Japan only, where MSX was still popular in 1990 (while Snake's Revenge was released in USA and Europe only). This is the reason why an official English version of Metal Gear 2 does not exist. However GamesNostalgia has patched the game with a fan-made update, and packed everything with an MSX emulator so that you can fully enjoy this amazing game.
As the second installment in the Metal Gear series, it picks up the story a few years after the events of the first game. Solid Snake is brought out of retirement and sent on a mission to recover a kidnapped scientist. The scientist has developed a substance that can purify petroleum that is intended to help with the upcoming oil crisis. Solid Snake follows the scientist’s trail to an isolated state in Central Asia controlled by mercenaries from all over the world. Like most power hungry multinational mercenary organizations, they intend to take over the world. Snake must infiltrate the stronghold to rescue the scientist and stop the evil plot. With the help of a few new faces, as well as some familiar ones, Snake finds out that not everything is as it seems. Snake must gather information, solve puzzles and figure out what’s really going on in Zanzibarland. Use your stealth and combat skills to get past guards and defeat bosses. With new abilities and tools at his disposal, Snake comes out of retirement better than ever.
Metal Gear 2 significantly improves the stealth-based game system of its progenitor in every way. It introduces a complex storyline dealing with themes involving the nature of warfare and and nuclear proliferation. The guards are more mobile and aware of their surroundings, making stealth more difficult. Snake now has the ability to kneel and crawl, giving him more options for how to maneuver through an area. There have also been vast improvements to the environments, making them more varied than the original. Though there are a few different opinions of the game, It is considered one of the best 8-bit games ever made. You will not be disappointed in this sequel.
