Game Review

Alien Breed 3D is the fourth game in the Alien Breed series and was developed by Team17. It was published by Team17 and Ocean in 1995 for the Amiga, both ECS and AGA models, including the Amiga CD32.

This entry into the series was the first to be done in 3D and was capable of supporting different level areas with lifts, atmospheric lighting, environmental shading, water, and much more. Though looked at as a Doom clone, the game’s engine was capable of things the Doom engine was not at that time. The game was created by an amazing programmer named Andrew Clitheroe, that managed also the game design and most of the graphics.

Just like its predecessors, Alien Breed 3D is a science fiction shooter. This one, however, was the first to be done from a first-person perspective (and it was also the first 3d first-person shooter to be created for the Amiga). There is no storyline to speak of, but you play as a lone marine who has to fight off an alien menace. It doesn’t skimp on weapons or gore, and at least you don’t start off with a pistol. With no melee weapons to fall back on, better watch your clip.

Of course, Alien Breed 3D does play incredibly a lot like Doom, but from where I’m standing that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Though some would complain about originality. Either way, it’s an entertaining game and not a bad clone. Well worth checking out.

Great game back then, and it works perfectly. But.... the test of time has not been nice to Alien Breed 3D

Wow, what an amazing website! I love how elegantly you've put these games together - just unzip, run the batch file and you're off and running. A lot of these games are notoriously hard to get just the right settings for, so I really appreciate you doing the work for us so we can just play the games! Thanks!
And you're extensively doing Amiga games - ahhh! Still my favorite computer of all time, and hard to emulate so the Amiga packs are especially appreciated. If you're taking requests, I'd love to see "Typhoon Thompson", "Shufflepuck Cafe" and "Leander". Thanks again, I wish you long life on the world wide web!
