Centerbase is a strategy and simulation game developed by reLINE and released in 1992, exclusively for the Amiga.
The game, also known as Centerbase: Science-Fiction Simulation, was conceived by Holger Gehrmann, Andreas Gehrke, and Karsten Obarski. The first two are known for their work on the programming and graphics of Fate: Gates of Dawn, while Obarski was the composer for Oil Imperium, a game to which Centerbase is considered a spiritual sequel.
Much like Oil Imperium, Centerbase combines business simulation with arcade-style minigames. In the game, you are tasked with managing the construction and upkeep of a sector within a futuristic city. You'll compete against other sector administrators by buying, selling, or trading goods and buildable spaces. But it's not just about clean business—players can sabotage their opponents' constructions or even attempt to invade their territory using an army of robots.
You must complete one of the objectives in the selected scenarios to win. The game ends when one of the three selectable scenarios is achieved: either you eliminate all opponents or control more than half of all buildable spaces at the end of the five in-game years.
Reviews from magazines at the time were very positive, although the game didn't reach the same level of popularity as its predecessor, Oil Imperium. One of the most puzzling decisions was using an EGA-style color palette, with very few colors. The Amiga was capable of much better. This decision likely stemmed from the intention to port the game to MS-DOS or Atari ST, though this never happened.
Nonetheless, if you're a fan of German-made strategy games, this is a title you should definitely try.
