Links 386 Pro is the follow-up to Links: The Challenge of Golf and was developed and published by Access Software in 1992 for DOS. It was ported to Macintosh in 1994, and FM Towns and PC-98 in 1995.
This entry into the Links series offers many improvements from the first game including SVGA Graphics, improved physics, and the first inclusion of sound. Choose between a male and female golfer, as well as change the color of their shirt. After choosing a character you must then choose your difficulty from 3 settings and, a tee position. The player has control over the avatar’s foot position and direction. When going for a shot the power of the swing is determined by the swing meter. When swinging you don’t just hold the button and release. You must also time a perfect button hit when the meter comes back down after the release. Too late or too early will blow the shot. The game features multiple courses to choose from including: Barton Creek, Torrey Pines, Harbour Town, and more. Choose up to 8 opponents or just casually play with yourself. Weather conditions can also be played around with for an added challenge.
Links 386 Pro did incredibly well upon release and snapped up multiple awards. I’m no golfer, but fans of the series or the sport will definitely enjoy this classic.
