Game Review

Soldier Blade is a vertical shoot 'em up developed by Hudson Soft and published in 1992 for PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16. This title represents one of the pinnacles of the genre on NEC's console, offering a pure arcade shooting experience that fits into the tradition of classics like R-Type, Gradius, and Thunder Force III.

The player takes control of a futuristic fighter that resembles '90s jet fighter concepts, navigating through a series of "Operations" that, despite their sophisticated name evoking espionage missions, simply consist of systematically annihilating everything moving on screen. The military nomenclature adds a touch of class to what is essentially a festival of pure destruction, where the objective is to line up your ship with overwhelming forces of enemy fighters, turrets, mech units, battleships, and floating fortresses of every kind.

The control system is based on two main buttons: the first controls the primary weapon, while the second activates the special attack. Primary weapons are divided into three distinct types: blue laser, green wave, and red bullet, each with different ballistic characteristics that adapt to various tactical situations. The choice between these weapon types becomes a matter of personal preference and situational strategy, similar to what happens in Blazing Lazers or Gate of Thunder.

The game's most interesting mechanic is the risk-reward system tied to special attacks. These devastating strikes, executed by the co-pilot or "option," can turn desperate situations around but come with a significant cost: each use reduces primary firepower by one level. This dynamic creates constant tension, forcing players to balance immediate use of destructive power against long-term sustainability of their armament, a more sophisticated mechanic than many contemporaries in the genre.

Visually, Soldier Blade fully exploits the PC Engine's capabilities, presenting detailed sprites, spectacular particle effects, and layered backgrounds that create a convincing sense of depth. The action takes place on a two-dimensional plane where ground and air enemies are eliminated with the same steady stream of projectiles, but the visual variety and animation quality keep the experience always fresh and engaging.

The game's pace is frantic and relentless, creating a manic experience where no moments of respite exist. Each "Operation" presents continuous waves of enemies with increasingly complex attack patterns, culminating in epic boss battles that require pattern memorization and lightning reflexes. This intensity-driven approach recalls the aesthetic of Dodonpachi and other bullet hell games, while maintaining the more accessible gameplay typical of Hudson Soft shooters.

The audio design perfectly complements the chaotic action with an energetic soundtrack that blends rock and techno elements, while sound effects provide satisfying feedback for every explosion and successful hit. The PC Engine's audio quality is exploited to create an immersive soundscape that amplifies the experience's intensity.

Soldier Blade excels because it fully embraces its nature as a pure shoot 'em up, without trying to complicate the formula with elements foreign to the genre. Maybe it's not at the same excellence level as Blazing Lasers, but if you are a fan of the genre, you cannot miss this fantastic game.
