The Ur-Quan Masters is a free project started in August 2002, when Toys For Bob released the partially ported sources of Star Control II for 3DO. This has been used to re-create a freeware clone of Star Control II, a game based on exploration, space combat, and ship customization.
After almost ten years since the last version, in January 2021 the developers have released version 0.8, with a lot of additions and fixes, including: a new graphics, sound, and input backend based on SDL2, which in turn grants much-improved fullscreen support as well as Metal and DirectX support on Mac and Windows; nine years of sporadic bugfixes from the community post-0.7; TLS support for the Windows installer; Unified build system on Mac, Linux, and Windows, with better coexistence with systemwide standard libraries; and more.
