Game Review

Total Recall is the adaptation of the science-fiction movie directed by Paul Verhoeven, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. The game was released in 1990, the same year of the film, and Ocean published it.

Active Minds developed two versions, one for 8-bit platforms and another for Atari ST and Amiga (the one you will find here). Unfortunately, like many other movie conversions, the quality of this title is not exceptional. It also seems that part of the team left during production, and Ocean had to complete the game with other developers. Not good.

This title has positive aspects, such as excellent graphics and exceptional music composed by legendary musician David Whittaker. But the gameplay is average. The hero will have to fight hordes of enemies with his gun or punch in the platformer-shooter levels.

The difficulty level is relatively high. Then, there are 2D racing levels with a top-down view. This could have been a nice level for the Commodore 64 version, but not for an Amiga. It also seems that the 16-bit version was first developed for ST and then ported to Amiga, which is one of the reasons why the game is not so fast.

In short, if you are a fan of the movie or a fan of Arnold, go ahead and play. If not... wait a minute; who is not a fan of the good old Schwarzy? Impossible! Go and play!

I still remember getting the demo version of Total Recall on a CU Amiga cover disk. The music was fantastic, the graphics good and the playability a total let down - which for me, as a big fan of the film, was frustrating. Playing it again today, it is ridiculously hard – poor Doug Quaid only has one life and you will see that get used up in no time at all. The music is still good, but none of it feels much like the film at all, and the game really fails on gameplay - it's too difficult and unrewarding.
