Dungeons & Dragons: Warriors of the Eternal Sun

Dungeons & Dragons: Warriors of the Eternal Sun

Dungeon & Dragons: Warriors of the Eternal Sun is an RPG created for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive by Westwood Associated and released in 1992.

The game designed by Louis J. Castle is based on the Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) game rules, and it's set in the Mystara Hollow World. You can control a party of 4 characters, either pre-made or generated. The classes are the ones of the first edition of D&D: cleric, fighter, magic-user, thief, dwarf, elf, and halfling. The choice of basic D&D is quite unusual. Most of the RPGs of the '90s were based on AD&D 2nd edition, with many more races and classes and settings like Forgotten Realms and Dragonlance. I wonder if SSI got the exclusivity regarding AD&D 2nd edition from TSR. This could be the reason.

Troddlers

Troddlers

Troddlers is a puzzle game developed by ATOD Design and published initially for the Amiga in 1992. It was also ported to MS-DOS and SNES.

In this cute and colorful game, your task is to create a path for all the small creatures so that they can exit the level. You create the way by placing blocks on the screen, with a mechanic similar to one of the popular 8-bit title Solomon's Key.

Considering that Troddlers was released one year after Lemmings and that it features small creatures, it's normal that the ATOD's puzzler was often considered a kind of clone of - or at least a game inspired to - Lemmings. But the reality is there are many differences between the 2 games. First, the block mechanics, but also because the levels occupy just 1 screen, without scrolling. It's also controlled with joysticks, not with a mouse, making Troddlers much more "arcade".

Contra: Hard Corps, also known as Probotector, is a shoot 'em-up created by Konami and published in 1994 for the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive.

The Contra series started as an arcade with the first game Contra, a success that was also ported to several 8-bit platforms, including NES, MSX, and Commodore 64. The sequel, Super Contra, also got an Amiga and an MS-DOS version. Contra III was the first game released for 16-bit consoles, specifically the SNES. Hard Corps is the sequel to Contra III, and it's the first (and only) game of the series to be released for the Sega Genesis.

Winter Games is a sports simulation created by Epyx originally for the Commodore 64. It was published in 1985, as a sequel to Summer Games, the highly successful title based on the 1984's Olympic games.

The Amiga version, developed by Incredible Technologies, was published in 1987. The game was also ported to Atari ST, MS-DOS, MSX, Sega Master System, and many other platforms. The players can compete in different disciplines, including alpine skiing, ski jumping, biathlon, figure skating, bobsled, speed skating, and others. Each one is like a mini-game, and some of them, for example, biathlon, could be easily considered a standalone game.

Solid Gold is a jump-and-run platform game created in 2013 for the Amiga by Frank Wille e Gerrit Wille (Night Own Design).

Inspired by classic platformers like Rick Dangerous and The Great Giana Sisters, the game features 10 levels and 4 worlds, each one with different graphics and enemies, but also nice sprites and great animations, thanks to the programming entirely in 68k assembler. There is no shooting: enemies must be eliminated by jumping on their heads. In fact, the joystick button is not used (but the second controller button can be configured for jumping).

Fate: Gates of Dawn

Fate: Gates of Dawn

Fate: Gates of Dawn is a first-person RPG created by reLINE for the Amiga and Atari ST in 1991.

In terms of gameplay, Fate is similar to Dungeon Master and Eye of the Beholder: this means exploration of the world happens in pseudo-3D, with fixed directions. You can build your party with different characters, but only four of them can be active at any point. You will manage them with the portraits you can see on the screen.

But Fate is not just another dungeon-crawler: it's a game with a complex storyline and puzzles that must be solved talking with the many NPCs that inhabit the world. Plenty of different races, classes, spells, weapons, cities to explore makes the experience very deep. Consider that inventory management plays a vital role because every object has a weight. Night/day cycles, various weather conditions, and graphics that probably are not exactly state-of-the-art (but still can be considered very good) make Fate one of the best computer role-playing experience you can have on an Amiga.
