Game Review

Dynamite Headdy is a platform game developed by Treasure and published by Sega for the Mega Drive/Genesis in 1994. It is one of the most inventive and technically accomplished games on the platform, and one of the most underrated classics of the 16-bit era.

The premise is charmingly absurd: Headdy is a puppet whose head can be detached and swapped with dozens of different heads, each granting a different ability. Some heads fire projectiles, others act as shields, and others enable special moves or unlock secret areas. The concept could easily have become a gimmick, but Treasure built an entire game around it with remarkable depth and consistency — every level introduces new situations that demand creative use of Headdy's abilities, and the puzzles are woven seamlessly into the platform action.

What strikes you immediately is the visual presentation. Dynamite Headdy is set on a theatrical stage, complete with curtains, backdrops, and props that shift and transform between scenes — the game is divided into acts rather than levels, each with its own distinct visual identity. The sprite work is exceptional even by the standards of a console known for strong hardware, and the animation is fluid and expressive throughout. The soundtrack matches the theatrical theme perfectly, with energetic compositions that shift in tone from playful to intense as the action demands.

The boss fights are where Dynamite Headdy truly excels. Treasure's reputation for inventive boss design — established with Gunstar Heroes the previous year — is fully on display here. Each encounter is entirely different from the last, requiring the player to observe patterns, adapt quickly, and often use a specific head at the right moment. Several of the later bosses rank among the finest in the genre.

The difficulty is demanding, particularly in the later stages, and the game is relatively short without the hidden bonus sections. Finding those secrets adds significant replay value and unlocks an alternate ending, rewarding players who take the time to explore. The European and American versions are also notably harder than the Japanese original, with fewer continues — something worth keeping in mind if you find the difficulty unusually punishing.

Dynamite Headdy never achieved the commercial success it deserved on its original release, overshadowed by bigger names in a crowded year. Decades later, it stands as one of Treasure's finest works and one of the most purely creative platformers ever made for the Mega Drive.
