Game Review

Micro Machines: Turbo Tournament '96 is a top-down racing game developed and published by Codemasters, released in 1995 for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive. It is the third entry in the Micro Machines series, following Micro Machines and Micro Machines 2: Turbo Tournament, and refines the formula of its predecessors while adding a handful of new features — most notably a Construction Kit that lets players build their own tracks.

The concept remains as charming as ever: tiny vehicles racing across oversized everyday environments — kitchen tables, bathroom floors, sandboxes, garden paths — viewed from a top-down perspective. Turbo Tournament '96 delivers 54 tracks set across the same imaginative variety of locations that made the earlier games so memorable. Dump trucks, hovercrafts, Formula 1 cars, and other vehicles all handle differently, and learning to manage the hovercraft sections in particular — notoriously fast and difficult to control — remains one of the game's most demanding challenges.

The game modes are generous. You can choose between Time Trial, Head-to-Head, League, and Challenge modes, each available in Normal or Pro difficulty. The Party mode, inherited from Micro Machines 2, supports up to 16 players using the same controller — a chaotic and enormously entertaining experience. Finishing three laps ahead of your opponent earns a life; lose all your lives, and you are eliminated. It is a simple system, but really fun.

The Construction Kit is the main new feature, and it is impressive for a console game of this era. Players could design their own courses from scratch, adjusting track layout, vehicle type, and weather conditions, and save their creations to the cartridge's battery memory.

Graphically, the game is clean and functional—a modest improvement over Micro Machines 2. The top-down view is crisp and easy to read, which matters enormously in a game where split-second reactions determine the outcome of every race. Sound is the weakest area: the menus feature a couple of well-executed rock themes, but the music disappears almost entirely once a race begins, leaving only engine noise, tire squeals, and the thump of colliding vehicles.

The main criticism was that Turbo Tournament '96 does not feel substantially different from its predecessor. Anyway, if you are new to the series, this is unquestionably the best entry point — one of the finest arcade racing games on the Genesis. If you are already a fan, you simply cannot miss this new chapter.
