Game Review

Sensible World of Soccer 95/96 is an improved version of Sensible World of Soccer, the soccer sim created by Sensible Software.

The game represents a crucial evolution in the football gaming genre, refining the fast-paced gameplay of its predecessors while enhancing its managerial depth. Developed by Sensible Software under the direction of Chris Chapman and Jon Hare, this edition builds on the foundation laid by Sensible Soccer and its immediate successor, Sensible World of Soccer, to deliver one of the most complete football experiences of the era.

Compared to Sensible Soccer, which emphasized quick, fluid matches, Sensible World of Soccer introduced an ambitious career mode, allowing players to take control of clubs and national teams worldwide, managing transfers, finances, and long-term strategies across multiple seasons. The game boasted an extensive database featuring thousands of real-life teams and players, making it one of the most comprehensive football games of its time. While the top-down perspective and one-button control scheme remained intact, refinements were made to player movement and tactical depth, allowing for more nuanced gameplay.

One of the most significant gameplay enhancements introduced in Sensible World of Soccer 95/96 was the addition of curling effects on low passes. This small but impactful feature allowed for greater ball control and passing precision, giving experienced players more ways to build attacks and execute complex plays. The physics engine was tweaked to provide a more dynamic and realistic feel, further refining the addictive gameplay. Alongside these improvements, various AI and balance tweaks were implemented to make the matches feel more responsive and fair.

Unlike previous editions, Sensible World of Soccer 95/96 was released exclusively for the Amiga, and it is often considered the best Amiga exclusive ever released and one of the best Amiga games of all time.

Throughout its various iterations, Sensible World of Soccer remained a benchmark for football games, influencing future titles with its perfect balance of accessibility and depth. The 95/96 edition is one of the most polished versions before the final Sensible World of Soccer 96/97, cementing its place as a cult classic. Even decades after its release, the game continues to have a devoted following, with enthusiasts playing and modifying it to this day. Thanks to its innovative design and enduring appeal, SWOS 95/96 remains one of the greatest football video games ever created.

Chris Chapman, the lead programmer, declared that this was the version they originally had in mind when they started working on the game.

Wonderful game for its simplicity and effectiveness. It was able to involve me as a player and as a manager. Balanced teams and guaranteed realism for the computer age of those times.
