Midtown Madness: The 90s Racing Game That Invented Open-World Driving

In May 1999, most racing games gave you a track, a car, and a countdown. [Midtown Madness] gave you Chicago. Not a corridor of barriers and grandstands, but an open rendition of a real American city — with traffic obeying signals, pedestrians going about their day, drawbridges rising and falling on their own schedule, and weather that slowly piled snow onto the roads and changed how your car handled. It was a different kind of racing game, and it arrived before anyone had quite worked out how to make one.

Ron Gilbert: Creator of Monkey Island, Maniac Mansion and the SCUMM engine

Ron Gilbert has a pretty big claim to fame, and not just for designing video games. He is also responsible for one of the most successful and widely used game engines ever created. Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego? The Story of the Series

Who in the world is Carmen Sandiego? It's okay if you sang that in your head, I did too. It brings back memories of pursuing a felonious red-clad woman all around the world. Carmen Sandiego came onto the scene in 1985, making her debut in "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?" The game was aimed at teaching geography in a fun and engaging way. The Carmen Sandiego series does an excellent job of making you forget that they are intended to be educational. They are also fun and challenging adventure games.

Richard Garriott: The Creator of Ultima and Father of Open-World RPGs

“Whenever I saw the sun, I reminded myself that I was looking at a star. One of over a hundred billion in our galaxy. A galaxy that was just one of billions of other galaxies in the observable universe. This helped me keep things in perspective.”
