Might and Magic Book One: The Secret of the Inner Sanctum is the first chapter of the popular RPG franchise created by New World Computing. The original game, developed for the Apple II by Jon Van Caneghem and released in 1986, was later ported to several platforms, including DOS, Commodore 64, MSX, and many others.
The game is set in a fantasy world where you can create a party of six adventurers finding their way through some of the lands around them. You can choose from different classes like knight, robber, sorcerer, cleric, paladin, and archer - each with its strengths and weaknesses - and then navigate your character through various combat encounters.
The adventure's mission is to discover The Secret of the Inner Sanctum, a sort of holy grail. Even if the story seems like a classic medieval fantasy plot, you will discover several science-fiction elements, like in Ultima. As in The Bard's Tale, the world exploration happens from a first-person view, with a pseudo 3D.
The game has a lot of elements that make it fun for casual players and those looking for something more challenging than most other RPGs today. There are plenty of dungeons to explore, which means you'll need to think about how you want your character leveled up before venturing into new areas; if you want the most potent equipment possible, you'll have to complete quests and defeat enemies along the way.
The first chapter of Might and Magic is simply a title any retro gamer and RPG lover cannot miss.
