Game Review

Rick Dangerous 2 is the sequel to the popular platformer created by Core Design, inspired by the character of Indiana Jones. The game serves as the direct sequel to the original Rick Dangerous from 1989, continuing the adventures of the fedora-wearing archaeologist.

Set in the modern day rather than the 1940s jungle and Egyptian settings of its predecessor, Rick Dangerous 2 sees our hero defending Earth from an alien invasion launched from a massive mothership hovering over London. This contemporary setting offers a refreshing change of scenery, transitioning from ancient temples and Nazi strongholds to futuristic alien environments, underground missile silos, and even the alien mothership itself. The shift in theme brings with it new weapons and gadgets, including a ray gun and jetpack, alongside Rick's traditional dynamite and pistol.

Visually, Rick Dangerous 2 represents a significant improvement over the original game. The graphics are considerably more detailed and colorful, particularly on the Amiga version, with larger, more expressive sprites and backgrounds that showcase greater artistic refinement. The animation is smoother and more characterful, giving Rick more personality through his movements and reactions. The alien environments are imaginatively designed with a distinctive sci-fi aesthetic that contrasts nicely with the more earthbound locations, creating visual variety that the first game sometimes lacked.

The gameplay retains the core mechanics that made the original memorable while adding new elements that take advantage of the futuristic setting. Rick can now use a jetpack for limited flight, adding a new dimension to the platforming challenges. The ray gun provides an alternative to the traditional pistol, though ammunition remains as scarce as ever. The level design shows more creativity and variety compared to Rick Dangerous, with each area presenting unique environmental challenges and visual themes.

However, Rick Dangerous 2 maintains and arguably amplifies the punishing difficulty that characterized its predecessor. The game is notorious for its trial-and-error gameplay, where deadly traps are often completely invisible until triggered, requiring players to memorize precise sequences through repeated deaths. Unlike more forgiving platformers, Rick Dangerous 2 delights in surprising players with instant-death scenarios that can only be avoided through prior knowledge.

This extreme difficulty extends beyond hidden traps to include precise jumping sequences, tight timing requirements, and limited resources that demand perfect execution. Another puzzle platformer by Core Design, Bubba 'N' Stix, also features challenging sequences, but it generally provides more visual or audio cues to help players anticipate dangers. Rick Dangerous 2's approach can feel unfair at times, turning what should be exciting exploration into frustrating repetition.

The sound design complements the improved visuals with memorable music and effects that enhance the sci-fi atmosphere. The alien weapon sounds and environmental audio create a convincing futuristic soundscape that surpasses the more generic audio of the original game.

Despite its punishing difficulty, Rick Dangerous 2 succeeds in creating a memorable and distinctive platforming experience. The improved graphics, creative level design, and expanded gameplay mechanics represent genuine evolution from the first game. However, potential players should be prepared for a genuinely challenging experience that requires patience, persistence, and a tolerance for repeated failure. If you liked Rick Dangerous 2, don't forget to try the extra levels of Rick Dangerous II½.
