Bomb Jack is an arcade platformer created by Tehkan (later known as Tecmo) and released in 1984. The game was designed by Michitaka Tsuruta and Kazutoshi Ueda (also known for the arcades Lady Bug and Mr. Do! and for Bonk's Revenge among other things). The arcade featured the acrobatic hero Jack collecting bombs while avoiding enemies across colorful single-screen levels inspired by famous landmarks and monuments. It was subsequently ported to numerous home computers, including the Commodore 64, Amiga, Amstrad CPC, ZX Spectrum, and MSX, with each version facing unique challenges in recreating the arcade experience.

The original arcade version showcased smooth, fluid animation with Jack's distinctive floating jump mechanics that allowed players to control his descent and direction mid-air with remarkable precision. The colorful graphics depicted famous world locations like the Sphinx, Big Ben, and Mount Rushmore as backdrops, while enemies moved in predictable but challenging patterns. The scoring system rewarded collecting bombs in numerical order and gathering power-ups that appeared when specific bombs were collected, creating a strategic element beyond simple collection gameplay.

The Commodore 64 port, released in 1986, suffered from significant technical limitations that fundamentally altered the gameplay experience. The most critical issue was the reduced frame rate and less responsive controls, making Jack's signature floating jumps feel sluggish and imprecise compared to the arcade original. The collision detection was notably problematic, often registering hits when Jack appeared to clearly avoid enemies. The graphics, while colorful, lacked the smooth animation of the arcade version, with enemy movements appearing jerky and less fluid. The sound effects were adequate but couldn't match the arcade's audio quality, though the music rendition was reasonably faithful to the original.

The Amiga version, which arrived in 1988, significantly improved the C64 port but fell short of arcade perfection. The enhanced graphics capabilities allowed for better color reproduction and smoother animation, making the game visually closer to its arcade counterpart. However, the controls remained somewhat less responsive than the original, though considerably better than the C64 version. The Amiga port featured improved sound effects and music quality, taking advantage of the system's superior audio hardware. Despite these improvements, some timing issues persisted, affecting the precise gameplay balance that made the arcade version so compelling.

Both computer versions struggled with the arcade's seamless screen transitions and the subtle gameplay mechanics that made bomb collection feel rewarding. The original arcade game's perfect balance between risk and reward was diminished in both ports, as the less precise controls made navigating around enemies more frustrating than challenging. The power-up system, while present, felt less integrated into the overall gameplay flow.

Almost all these problems have been solved with Bomb Jack Beer Edition, an Amiga-only remake released in 2018.

Bomb Jack's influence can be seen in later platformers that emphasized collection mechanics over traditional left-to-right progression, sharing similarities with games like Bubble Bobble in its single-screen format and strategic enemy avoidance. The floating jump mechanic would later inspire elements found in games like Rainbow Islands. Players seeking similar experiences might also enjoy Pengo for its single-screen puzzle-platforming elements or Lode Runner for its emphasis on strategic movement and collection gameplay, though neither quite captures Bomb Jack's distinctive aerial physics and monument-hopping charm.
