Game Review

Quest for Glory II: Trial by Fire is the second chapter of the fantasy adventure/RPG series created by Corey and Lori Ann Cole for Sierra On-Line. Trial by Fire was developed and published in 1990 for DOS and Amiga.

The game has a mixture of RPG and adventure gameplay and is the last of the series to use a command-based interface. The RPG elements show when it comes to character development during gameplay. They are also in real-time combat that is more complex than in the previous game, Quest for Glory I: So You Want To Be A Hero. The adventure elements are primarily in the exploration, completion of quests, and puzzle-solving sections of gameplay.

Picking up the story where the first one left off, the hero must now help the inhabitants of the desert who are having trouble with elementals and an evil wizard. The game takes place over 30 days, and certain puzzles can only be accessed at specific times. This does lead to a stringently linear storyline without much wiggle room. Players can choose their character’s class from among three choices; thief, fighter, and wizard. Should your character remain pure of spirit, they can earn the title of Paladin, a first for the series. Players can also import their character from the first game rather than starting anew. The game was a hit with critics and gamers and is cited by many as the best of the series. Fans of the series will enjoy this one; newcomers may want to start with the first one.
