Game Review

The Chaos Engine is a two-player cooperative top-down shooter set in a steampunk Victorian-era England. The game was developed by The Bitmap Brothers and published by Renegade Software in 1993 for the Amiga, both ECS, and AGA. Later, it was ported to Atari ST, SNES, Sega Mega Drive, DOS, and other platforms. In the US, it was renamed Soldiers of Fortune.

In the game, you can choose 2 of the six available mercenaries; one will be controlled by you and the other one by the computer, unless you have a friend with you. You will have to explore the levels, fight the enemies, find keys and power-ups until you finally defeat the Baron Fortesque and the Chaos Engine itself.

William Gibson and Bruce Sterling's novel, The Difference Engine, inspired the plot and settings. GamesNostalgia offers you the Amiga AGA version.

The sequel, The Chaos Engine 2, was released in 1996 and introduced a competitive mode instead of the cooperative one.

One of my all-time favourite Amiga games, and it hasn't aged a bit. The Bitmap Brothers always came with excellent music and top quality graphics, and The Chaos Engine is no exception. It can be tough, but it is possible. Once you’ve done the levels enough to memorise the best routes or places to get the most goodies, then it’s just a matter of being a good team – the combination of which plays a big part in your overall success. It’s a rewarding and addictive game; my only gripe is the small amount of energy the players have, but at least you can gradually increase it. For me, this steampunk action shooter was the pinnacle of the Bitmap’s work at that time, and it has lost none of its allure.
